PHOENIX was the University of Cambridge's mainframe. It was decomissioned in 1995, and this is a web page collecting various bits of documentation about it.

Social

When PHOENIX was decomissioned, a photograph was taken and a film was made.

From left to right : Ted Sohn <CWS10>. Richard Watts <RRW1000>, Ian Jackson <IWJ10> , Elizabeth Pringle <EMPP1>, Colin Bell <CRB11>, Martin Hardcastle <MJH22>, ?, Alabra Stoddart <PAS14>, Karl Ewald <KME10> with full chorus of tables, vendepacs, and other strange and wonderful creatures of the last days.

The end of PHOENIX film can be downloaded by clicking on this link. It's about 4Mbytes, and should be played at about 2-3s/frame.

Specifications

This section will eventually contain specifications for some PHOENIX software, but not quite yet.

Papers

This section will eventually contain some papers about PHOENIX.

Software

Quite a few of the programs that used to run on PHOENIX live on in various incarnations. Here's a (partial) list:

  • GROGGS, a bulletin board, lives on in a UNIX incarnation.
  • C and perl versions of GROAN are available from rrw@semiramis.org.uk.
  • SGCAL is a descendant of GCAL.
  • There is a UNIX port of ZED somewhere, but neither I nor Google can find it (and, coincidentally, there's an entirely different editor, also called ZED).
  • The E editor lives on as NE.

When I find some, I'll put some in ...
